Paul Ross B.A. LL.B. Paul Ross B.A. LL.B.

Paul graduated from McGill University, Montreal in 1965, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  After receiving his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School he was called to the bar in 1967.

 

For the past 40 years he has appeared in virtually every court including the Ontario Court of Justice - Criminal and Family divisions, the Superior Court of Justice, the Divisional Court, the Federal Court, as well as tribunals such as the Ontario Municipal Board and the Labour Relations Board.

 

He has a great general practice which has included litigation, municipal law, real estate, estates, and commercial law. His work included acting as a part time Crown both federally and provincially.

 

Over those same 40 years Paul has also worked as a political speech writer for provincial cabinet ministers, edited a national travel magazine, wrote a published novel, held numerous board positions on not for profit corporations, sat as a member of town council for two terms and actively participated in his community at many levels.

 

These days Paul is the managing partner at The Ross Firm and active in the commercial law area of the practice.

 

He is the subject of a chapter entitled The Country Lawyer from the book by Jack Batten called LAWYERS.

 

He had a hand in raising his two children (Tegan and Quinn) along with several dogs (currently a standard poodle named Harley).

 

On weekends and holidays, depending on the season, Paul favours time on his motorcycle, skiing and being with his spouse Heather and his family.

Heather Joy Ross was born in Terrace, in northern British Columbia, on September 29, 1949, the eldest child of Joy and George Martin.  With her two brothers and her sister, she grew up in northern B.C. and in Kelowna, B.C. in the Okanagan Valley in B.C.’s interior.  She moved to Toronto in 1971 and, with her husband, Paul Ross, to Huron County in 1976.   

 

As the parent of two children, she attended law school as a mature student at the University of Western Ontario, London where she won two academic prizes for highest standing in torts and civil liberties and human rights.  She graduated in l984.

 

Since her call in 1986, she has been a partner in the five lawyer firm, The Ross Firm in Goderich, Ontario.  She has extensive experience in litigation primarily in family and criminal law.

 

From 1998 to the present she has been a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Law, U.W.O. and from 2000 to 2005 she was adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario teaching ethics and family law practice and procedure.  In 2004 she contributed to the development of the new first year full term mandatory course on ethics at Western.  In the spring of 2005 she co-taught that course in its inaugural term.

 

From 2001 to 2005 she served as Head of Section, Professional Responsibility and Practice Management, Bar Admission Course, Law Society of Upper Canada.

 

In 1995, she was elected a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada and she has served three four year terms since then to the present.  As a Bencher, she has served as chair, vice-chair, co-chair and member of a number of committees and task forces including the task force on the re-drafting of the Rules of Professional Conduct, the first co-chair of the Equity and Aboriginal Issues Committee, member of the Appeal Panel, member of the Human Rights Monitoring Group and currently as vice-chair of the Professional Regulation Committee.

 

She is the founder, past president and member of the Southwest Region Women’s Law Association, past president of the Huron Law Association and is a member of a number of professional legal organizations.

 

She has authored and presented several papers on topics related to ethics and professionalism.

 

Heather Ross has a son, Quinn, a lawyer with The Ross Firm, and a daughter, Tegan, and three grandchildren, Shayna, Rory and Kieran in Whistler, B.C.

Quinn received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario in 2004.  While at Western, Quinn spent some time as the voice of the Faculty of Law at the University Student's Council.  Quinn also participated in the UWO Law clinic system as a supervisor for two years.  As a result of his contribution to the community of London in the areas of poverty law and access to justice, Quinn was awarded the Morris Kroll Memorial Award.  Further, Quinn received a Legal Aid Ontario GEM Award for working to advance the clinic system and the legal aid plan in Ontario.  During his articling year, Quinn participated in a documentary series called The First Year, where he was one of 4 students whose progress was followed by the Life Network.

Practicing in the areas of Corporate, Commercial, Civil Litigation and Real Estate; Quinn also carries on a significant criminal practice in his role as Part-Time Crown Attorney. His experience covers all stages of litigation as well as negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Further, Quinn possesses unique knowledge in the area of Federal and International Aviation.

Despite his love for the court room, Quinn truly enjoys working with business and their owners to facilitate transactions, structure deals or simply to be available to bounce ideas off of.

Quinn also sits on many non-profit boards and committees throughout the Huron/Perth area. Most notably Quinn recently concluded his tenure as chair of the Huron Perth Community Legal Clinic, making him the youngest person in the system's history to hold this prestigious post.

In his off time, Quinn enjoys hitting the open road with his wife Erin and their motorcycle.  During the winter months Quinn straps on the planks and heads for anything that is snow-covered and steep. In between Quinn enjoys canoe camping in Algonquin and elsewhere.

 

Jenn Maureen McMillan Cohen B.A. (hons.) LL.B. Jenn Maureen McMillan Cohen B.A. (hons.) LL.B.

Jenn received her LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario in 2004. For two years at Western, Jenn was a Supervisor to caseworkers and associate caseworkers at Community Legal Services. She was also responsible for the carriage of a caseload of Small Claims Court, Criminal and Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal matters.

Jenn continues to dedicate her time to poverty law issues in Ontario. She is an Executive Board Member for the Huron-Perth Legal Aid clinic in Stratford, Ontario.

Jenn’s legal interests lie principally in family and civil litigation. Jenn appears regularly in Child Protection Proceedings in the Court of Justice and family matters in Superior Court of Justice.

She is a member of both the Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations.

Elli Mark Cohen B.A. (hons.) LL.B. Elli Mark Cohen B.A. (hons.) LL.B.

Elli received his LL.B from the University of Western Ontario in 2004. For two years at Western, Elli was a Supervisor to caseworkers and associate caseworkers at Community Legal Services. He was also responsible for the file management of a caseload of Small Claims Court, Criminal and Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal matters. Elli continues to dedicate his time to Community Legal Services as a member of its Advisory Committee.

While at Western, Elli was a student editor of the Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence. He also received the following awards:

  • The Gretta J. Grant award in community legal service;
  • The Legal Aid Ontario GEM Award; and
  • The Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP Practice Management Skills Award.

Elli's legal interests are varied, but lie principally in family and civil litigation. He appears regularly in front of the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice.

He is a member of both the Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations.
